NBA Inside Stuff Review - Magic Act
Volume Three, Issue Five: Dream Team III, new logos, and inline basketball!
It’s another Dream Team Issue, which is fine. I like the Olympics and sending our best players to compete on the world stage. But we were spoiled with the original Dream Team. The Dream Team III is like The Godfather Part III. Both have a great cast (team), and it feels like it should be a big deal, but nothing is ever going to live up to the original.
News & Notes
To further my point that the original Dream Team is the apex of all Dream Teams, this issue features an article titled ‘Reliving the Dream’ outlining the team’s path to Olympic gold.
Love the new logos for the Rockets, Hawks, and Sonics. Which one is your favorite? I had a Hawks hat with this logo on it. I think I wanted it because the Hawks were the only team I saw play regularly because their games were on TBS.
Have a gander at the past times of some of your favorite NBA coaches. I’d have loved to buy a tie from Rudy Tomjanovich.
Let’s get to know hoops legend Rebecca Lobo!
Say whaaaaat?
A savant from Graham, KY, correctly guessed all 29 first-round picks of the 1995 NBA draft. WHERE IS SHE NOW??
Inline Basketball. This is so 90s that it made my brain short-circuit. Former NBA player Tom LaGarde conceived this idea, and it’s still being played today.
Best card
As a bit of a surprise, this is the first issue without cards. I double-checked to make sure they weren’t included, but there is no reference to them on the cover, or anywhere else. Maybe they were nixed so they could dedicate more pages to USA Basketball.
Best Ad
Dope ad for the new Jordans (The 11s, I think? I’m not a big sneakerhead). It's just a picture of the sneakers and a phone number. THAT’S ALL YOU NEED.
Here’s another version of the Levi’s ad from the previous issue. This one has guitars.
More NBA video games! This one is for NBA Give ‘n Go by Konami. The left column shows you moves and features that are available in the game, the most egregious of which is “moving picks.” It’s 90’s Bullyball, y’all!
Cool Champs Sports ad featuring Deion in a Florida State sideline jacket.
I WANT A SUPER DATA BLASTER! It’s like sports-reference before sports-reference.
Arguably the most 90’s toy of all time:
Shawn Kemp mean-mugging me into buying his sneakers.
Does anyone remember the Ewing Empire?
The JAM
USA Basketball Shaq!
