This past weekend, I went to a card show for the first time in almost thirty years. It was a fun trip back to my childhood because, unlike a lot of things, card shows haven’t really changed all that much. Aside from vendors accepting Venmo or the ability to look up comps on your phone, it’s still the same deal: a smoky/mildew-smelling venue (in this case, an American Legion), card tables with inventory that you can sift through and touch, as well as the camaraderie of talking to dealers and others with similar interests.
eBay certainly makes buying cards easier and, in most cases, cheaper, but there is something much more satisfying in looking through rows or cases of cards and chatting up dealers. The best part is finding something you might not even be looking for in the first place. Here’s my haul:

News & Notes
Grant Hill is all over this issue. I forgot how much of a marketing machine he was!
Test your knowledge!
NBA Inside Stuff predicts future ALL-NBA Teams! I love this so much. Let’s see how they did:
Actual 2000-2001 All-NBA First Team: Tim Duncan, Chris Webber, Shaquille O’Neal, Allen Iverson, Jason Kidd
Actual 2005-2006 All-NBA First Team: LeBron James, Dirk Nowitzki, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash
It’s really hard to predict All-NBA teams. It’s REALLY hard to predict All-NBA teams five years into the future, and it is SO INCREDIBLY HARD to predict an All-NBA team TEN years into the future. In 1996, no one was looking at Dirk or Nash and thinking “This guy has “All-NBA written all over him!” Also, no one could have predicted someone like LeBron coming into the league that far in advance. But it’s still a fun exercise!
Let’s take a look at past #1 picks from the Lottery Era of the NBA:
I’ve always liked Michael Finley and felt he never got the credit he deserved.
It’s the Third Annual Stuffy Awards!!! Congrats to Lil Penny! I also love the David Robinson drawing; it’s very ‘A Few Good Men.’
They are really pushing NBA.com here. Email! It’s the future!
Say whaaaaat?
Robert Parish in a Charlotte Hornets jersey does not compute.
Best card
SkyBox going cheap with only four cards in this issue. They’re all Grant Hill and they’re all just ok.
Best Ads
Sick cross trainers, brah.
I really love this Gatorade ad with MJ.
KAZAAM!!!
Did Grant Hill really donate a kidney?
Don’t forget to pick your pair of next-gen binoculars!
This Coca-Cola ad is like a cover of Mad magazine.
Get me the Lenny Wilkins shirt and a pair of those USA Basketball shorts STAT!
I’ve never played NBA JAM EXTREME, but it looks WILD! (video)
The JAM
Antonio McDyess brings it home!
